After finishing the
third book in the space trilogy, That
Hideous Strength, I really enjoyed the how Lewis ends on a good note.
Throughout the story, a married couple named Jane and Mark are stuck in a
pretty crappy relationship. Both are pretty much still together only because of
their commitment to marriage. As the story goes on they end up getting split up
for the majority of the rest of the story. Mark ends up working for a company
called N.I.C.E (National Institute for Coordinated Experiments) and Anne ends up working for the opposite of
Mark- a group of people who week to bring an end to N.I.C.E
Towards the
end of the story Mark comes to the realization that N.I.C.E is actually an evil
company that needs to be destroyed. As he works for them he tries to escape
numerous times and come to learn of their ultimate plan. Through Mark’s journey
he changes… he suddenly starts to learn that his wife was not as crazy as he
set her out to be and begins to grow in deeper love with her. On the other
hand, Jane as well begins to change a bit as well. She too, essentially, begins
to fall in deeper love with mark as well. At the end the two are finally
reunited and their relationship is stronger than ever.
What is neat
about their relationship is that it is raw and real. So often in life we think
that once we marry someone everything will fall into place and become easy;
however, marriage is a commitment to someone that never truly becomes smooth
sailing. Rather, it is full of sacrifices and constant growing/learning
experiences. Sometimes space becomes one of the best things for relationships
that are struggling because it allows one to step back, get a breath of fresh
air, and look at the problem at a new perspective. I think Lewis does a great
job of depicting that in Mark and Jane’s relationship and he does it all
according to the plot of the story which is really well done.
