I do not know why exactly, but The Horse and His Boy has always been my favorite in the Narnia series. When I am working at my camp and am placed in a cabin as a counselor for the young Bear Campers (6-10 years old) It is the first book I grab to use as a bed time story. I just never get tired of Shasta's adventure. Even though I do not think Shasta is meant to be one of most adventurous and heroic characters, his story is one I think should get more attention. I love his conversations with Bree, his reservations and then close bond with Aravis and Hwin. Alsan's role in the book is one that excited me. He was always there and not always in a form one would expect. Aslan had to chase the four at one point to get them away form danger an set them in a direction that would save them. He's behind the sense working wonders in Shasta's life without him knowing it at all. I find it exciting! Also, Shasta's real identity is one I think can really relate to kids, we all have the chance to shine and be rulers. One should not ever be disc rouged from the lies that sprout form thoughts of "I can't" or "I never will." One little thing I do really enjoy about The Horse and His Boy is how the story can easily sit on its own. No real back story is needed to under stand the book. Out of them all (with perhaps LLW being an exception as it was the first book..), I think it can be held alone the best.
