Sam Atkinson, Watchmen "Tertiary" World

One thing really interesting about the Watchmen graphic novel is the use of another inner comic to discuss the occurrences of the novel. There is a story within the story which is also a comic called "Tales of the Black Freighter." It's read by a very minor character, a teen who is living in the crazy alternate history of Watchmen. Very intentionally, the child reads it in spurts as different events in this alternate history unfold parallel to the events in the novel. This sort of "tertiary" world is extremely interesting as it provides yet another perspective for us, as not only a commentary on our own world, but on the world of the novel. It's an interesting technique that I have not seen in any other medium.
