Sam Atkinson, Music and it's transporting power

I think that in a lot of ways, music is as a powerful a transporter as a novel. Its a participatory mode of artistic expression, the texture of sounds, and the use of lyrics creates an obvious visual and sensual experience in the mind. It has the ability to take us to places we have not been in many years. It takes us to the memories, both painful and joyous. It also takes us to places we have never been, with cultural instrumental touches present in different foreign musics. But what is great about music is that there is no word or image needed to convey emotions there within. Some of the most powerful works of music are symphonies devoid of voice and language, and instead composed entirely of emotions. With this, I think music contrasts, in that at the very end of it, music is an entity which is simply the expression of feelings and moods. No more, no less. A great song may have a great deal of meaning in its lyrics, but when devoid of emotion, it may fall apart.
