Sam Atkinson: The Power of the Written Word

I remember a great discussion we had at the beginning of the year. We talked about the power of the written word. We talked about how the book has something that all other art forms do not. This thing is the ability to completely create an entire world in our own heads. Every single quality described in a novel is the paint to our canvas, the instruments to our songs, and the characters in our plays. We create the artwork and the writer provides us with the materials necessary to create them.

In this way, it allows us to escape to new places, new ideas, and new horizons of life. We can extend where we have explored and what sights we have seen all through the turning of a page and the reading of a word. The written word can help create, it can help bring life to things long lost, and can change perspectives simply through being arranged in such a way that we can create our own narrative.
